A Guide to Waterfalls in the San Juan Mountains

Rex Falls

near Lake City, Colorado

Description:

Rex Falls is a short, easy, out and back hike that begins with crossing over logs that have been laid across the winding stream. The trail follows the waterfall up the mountain and crosses the shallow stream several times. The further you hike, the more stunning it becomes as the white water cascades down the mountainside.

Directions:

Head south from Lake City on Highway 149 toward Lake San Cristobal. Drive on Highway 149 south for about 27 miles. Turn west (right) on Co Rd 10/Forest Road 515 and head toward Troutvale Reservoir #1/Brown Lakes. Drive for 1.3 miles and turn right up the short, dirt road. The drive takes about 45 minutes from Lake City, CO.

At the Falls:

The entrance to a parking area is straight across from the Troutvale Reservoir #1 as you enter the Brown Lakes State Wildlife Area. There are no signs, just a little dirt road leading to the parking area, which is quite small. The trail starts at the end of the parking area.

Tip: Bring some water shoes with the rubber soles for the hike because your feet will get wet.
