Porphyry Gulch and Bullion King Lake - Hiking in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado

This breathtaking hike leads to Bullion King Lake and Porphyry Lake. The jeep road traverses beautiful rock formations, waterfalls, and meadows brimming with wildflowers in the summer. It also passes old mining ruins. Bullion King Lake is tucked away in the magnificent Porphyry Basin with the backdrop of Three Needles Peak. Continue on to Porphyry Lake to explore the upper basin.

Directions:

From Hwy 550, turn on Forest Road 822. I parked where the pin is dropped at the first set of switchbacks. This is a steep 4WD road with little room to pass. There are a few more parking spots further up the switchbacks under a group of trees.
