UN 13,155’, sometimes referred to as “Non-compahgre,” is a rugged and rewarding peak nestled in the Uncompahgre Wilderness near Lake City, Colorado. While often overshadowed by its towering neighbor, Uncompahgre Peak, this lesser-known summit offers an adventurous route, stunning scenery, and a sense of solitude that makes it well worth the effort.
I began my hike at the lower Nellie Creek Trailhead, following the road up to the main Nellie Creek Trailhead before joining the standard route for Uncompahgre Peak. The trail climbed steadily, and as I reached approximately 12,000 feet, I passed the junction for Uncompahgre Peak and Big Blue Creek. Shortly beyond that point, I left the established trail and began my approach toward UN 13,155’.
Crossing through the middle of the tundra basin, I headed southwest, aiming for the saddle along the summit ridge. The steep cliffs on the northeast face and the seemingly narrow summit ridge might appear intimidating, but by continuing toward the saddle, the route remained manageable. The final approach to the saddle was steep but remained a Class 2 climb.
Once on the ridge, the real adventure began. I followed the slightly exposed ridge southeast to the summit, carefully picking my way through loose rock while staying mindful of the sheer dropoffs on the other side.
The summit offered fantastic views of Broken Hill, Wetterhorn, Matterhorn, and of course, Uncompahgre Peak.
While UN 13,155’ may not be the most famous peak in the San Juans, it offers a fun hiking experience filled with solitude, route-finding, and breathtaking views. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, UN 13,155' is a climb worth adding to your list.
