If you’re seeking a hike with a bit of route-finding, some scrambling, a fun climb through a V-notch, and a touch of exposure, this is the perfect mountain for you! The effort is rewarded with stunning panoramic views. I had an absolute blast on this hike and kept it safely at a Class 2+ the entire way.
Precipice Peak, part of the Cimarron Range in Colorado, rises dramatically, with vibrant volcanic pinnacles and eroded formations standing in striking contrast to the surrounding landscape. The hike starts in Wetterhorn Basin, though if you don’t have a high-clearance vehicle, you’ll need to begin farther down the 4WD road.
The early portion of the hike is a pleasant stroll with views of Precipice and Courthouse Mountain, but the terrain quickly becomes steeper and more challenging. After following a faint trail through the dense forest and rocky slopes, I emerged above the treeline onto tundra and talus fields. I went up the tundra to the saddle and then picked up a slight trail to the V notch.
After climbing through the V notch, the final ascent required navigating some loose terrain and some Class 2+ scrambles before reaching the summit. From the top, I enjoyed panoramic views of Dunsinane Mountain, Courthouse Mountain, and the distant Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre Peaks. Despite its visibility from nearby towns, Precipice Peak remains lightly trafficked, making the route difficult to follow but rewarding for its solitude and dramatic scenery.
