Tower Mountain

Nestled within the San Juan Mountains in Colorado, Tower Mountain stands as a majestic sentinel, its lofty peak reaching an impressive elevation of 13,558 feet (4,132 meters). Situated just six miles west of the Continental Divide and northeast of the picturesque town of Silverton, this towering summit commands attention, its imposing silhouette visible from the winding stretches of the Million Dollar Highway and the quaint streets of Silverton below.

Tower Mountain reigns supreme as the highest among the array of 13ers that encircle Silverton, its prominence a testament to the awe-inspiring grandeur of the surrounding landscape. The pristine waters that cascade from Tower Mountain's slopes find their way into the waiting arms of the Animas River, nourishing the land and sustaining life along its meandering course.

I began my hike in Velocity Basin, a hidden gem nestled within a cirque basin, where a tranquil turquoise lake glistens in the alpine sunlight. Accessible via CR 52 outside of Silverton, this serene oasis awaits those who dare to venture into its pristine wilderness, offering a sanctuary of peace and tranquility amidst the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.
