From the trailhead, descend toward Henson Creek and cross the Alpine Gulch bridge. The route then climbs steadily through a narrow, picturesque canyon along Alpine Gulch.
Bring some water shoes or be prepared to get your feet wet - in the first 2.5 miles, you’ll encounter seven creek crossings. Some crossings have logs, while others require stepping through the water.
When the trail branched off, I went left along the East Fork of Alpine Gulch. From there, the trail climbs 3.75 miles through a mix of aspen groves, open meadows, and dense spruce forest. I was at the bottom of a meadow when I spotted a moose ahead of me off in the distance.
A steep ascent brings you to a saddle north of Grassy Mountain, where there was a site for camping. Another climb leads to the Grassy Mountain saddle, where sweeping views stretch in multiple directions. It was neat to see that Jennifer and Gerry Roach had signed the summit log.
